June 27, 2009 - Baty Farm in Dixon, Montana, and Mission Mountain Organic Egg Farm in Ronan, Montana

9:30 AM pre-registration/10:00 tour at the Baty Farm (includes lunch at noon)
1:30 PM tour at Mission Mountain Organic Egg Farm
$15 registration fee includes two tours, lunch and egg give-away.

Doug and Antje Baty have 5 acres of certified organic vegetables, herbs and seed nestled in a 280-acre farm in Dixon, MT. These dedicated farmers are willing to share their knowledge with people who are starting, or are already involved in, small-scale vegetable and seed production. They also grow squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers for the Western Montana Growers Coop—a collection of local farmers who distribute fresh food through much of western Montana. Bring your own blanket or chairs for a picnic-style lunch.

John and Crystal Walkup operate Mission Mountain Organic Egg Farm, a certified organic egg operation in Ronan, MT. No factory farmed chickens here! About 2,000 happy laying hens have lots of indoor space, straw bedding and access to a large pasture. The Walkups will be conducting a walk-through tour of feed processing, chick brooding, the laying house, the yard, and egg processing.

Directions to Baty Farm, 133 East Street, Dixon, MT 59831:

HWY 200 to Dixon, South on Second Street (by the Post Office). Continue up the hill until the road ends (about 200 yards). Remember that it is Montana road construction season. Allow yourself plenty of time for possible delays.

Directions from Baty Farm to Mission Mountain Organic Egg Farm, 43919 Back Road, Ronan, MT 59864:

Join our caravan and follow the signs north on East Street, turn right at MT-200/Mt Hwy 200 (continue to follow MT-200 for 6.7 miles), turn left at MT 200/US-93 (continue to follow US-93 for 20.8 miles), to the north edge of Ronan, turning left (west) on Round Butte Road (by Dairy Queen), then go past the 4 mile marker to first right (Back Road). Go north on Back Road 3.5 miles. Follow the signs along the routes.

Ride sharing is available. Call Susan Waters at (406) 542-9211 to sign up.

The tours are co-sponsored by the Montana Organic Association, The Good Food Store, Montana Department of Agriculture, Western Montana Growers Coop, AERO, Third Street Market, and Organic Crop Improvement Association, North Central Montana Chapter.

To pre-register or for more information, contact Susan Waters at (406) 542-9211 or email moa@montanaorganicassociation.org.
